Steroid Injections for Keloid Scars: How They Work and What to Expect

Steroid Injections Keloid Birmingham

If you have a keloid scar on your chest, back, shoulders or elsewhere on the body, steroid injections are the most effective non-surgical treatment available. This guide explains exactly how they work, what to expect during and after treatment, and how many sessions you may need.

What Are Steroid Injections for Keloids?

Steroid injections — typically using triamcinolone acetonide — are injected directly into the keloid scar tissue. The steroid works by suppressing the overactive scar tissue cells, causing the keloid to soften, flatten, and reduce in size over a series of weeks.

They are the first-line treatment for body keloids and are particularly effective for scars on the chest, back, and shoulders — areas where surgical excision alone carries a high recurrence risk.

What Does the Injection Feel Like?

The injection stings briefly as it is administered — most patients describe it as a sharp, short pinch. Once the injection is complete, a small plaster is applied and you are free to leave. There is no downtime.

You may notice mild itching around the scar for up to 2 days after treatment — this is a normal response and a sign the steroid is working. The scar typically begins to feel softer and flatter within 6–8 weeks of each session.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions required depends on the size, thickness, and age of the keloid. Sessions are spaced a minimum of 6 weeks apart to allow the steroid to take full effect before reassessing.

Mr George will assess your keloid in person and advise on the number of sessions he recommends based on your individual case. Most patients require between 1 and 3 sessions to achieve a satisfactory result.

How Much Do Steroid Injections Cost?

Steroid injections at Precision Surgery are priced at £200 for one session or £400 for three sessions. The number of sessions recommended will depend on the size and response of your keloid, which Mr George will discuss with you following a photo assessment.
