Keloid Scar

An ear keloid scar is a raised, thick scar that can form on the ear after an injury like a piercing or surgery. They can be itchy, painful, and unsightly.

The exact cause of keloid scars is unknown, but they are thought to be related to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Keloid scars can occur anywhere but usually are on the chest, arms, back and face. It is also very common to get large lumpy keloid scars after piercings on ears. If excised KELOID SCARS HAVE A HIGH RECURRENCE RATE OF 50% or more, with a concurrent steroid injection, this goes down to 10-15%. OUR CLINIC HAS A RECURRENCE RATE OF < 5%, and we’re so confident of this that we will offer any follow-up steroid injection or revision surgery for recurrence for free in the first 6-months.

Risk Factors For Keloid Scars Include:

Keloid scars are a type of scar that can form on the skin in response to injury. Several risk factors contribute to the development of keloids. Ethnicity plays a significant role, with keloids most commonly found in individuals of Black African, Caribbean, or Asian descent. The age of the person is also a critical factor, with the highest incidence of keloids occurring between 20-30 years old. The type of injury can influence the likelihood of developing a keloid, with burns carrying the highest risk. Additionally, the anatomical site of the injury is important; keloids are most commonly observed in scars on the ear lobe, shoulders, and sternal notch. A previous history of keloid formation can also increase the risk of developing another keloid. Understanding these risk factors can help in the prevention and management of keloids

There Is No Cure For Keloid Scars

Steroid injections

Steroid injections can help to reduce inflammation and shrink the keloid scar. This is mostly used for flatter keloid scars on the chest/ or limbs and used in conjunction with any excision surgery to reduce the chance of recurrence.

Conservative measures

Pressure clips, Silicone tape and gels can reduce bulky scars if mild, and also help in preventing recurrence of keloid scarring.

Surgery + Steroid injection

Surgery is usually only recommended for ear keloid scars that are large or that are causing significant discomfort. A majority of the keloid scar is removed, leaving some skin to close the wound, steroid is then injected to ensure any residual keloid is gone and does not recur.
