Ear keloids are one of the most common reasons patients visit Precision Surgery. If you have developed a firm, raised scar on your earlobe or ear cartilage — often following a piercing — this guide explains your options, the surgical process, and what you can realistically expect.
What Is an Ear Keloid?
A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that develops at the site of a wound or skin injury. On the ear, they most commonly appear after piercings, particularly on the earlobe or upper cartilage. Keloids can grow significantly larger than the original wound, becoming uncomfortable, itchy, or cosmetically distressing.
Unlike normal scars, keloids do not settle on their own — and without proper treatment, they tend to continue growing.
How Are Ear Keloids Treated?
At Precision Surgery, ear keloids are treated surgically. Mr George excises the keloid and administers a steroid injection into the wound at the time of surgery. This combined approach — removal plus steroid injection — is the gold standard for minimising recurrence.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and typically takes 30–45 minutes. You are awake throughout but completely comfortable once the area is numbed.
What Is the Recurrence Rate?
Keloid recurrence after surgery is a genuine concern — and it is important to choose a surgeon who takes this seriously. At Precision Surgery, the recurrence rate following Mr George’s combined excision and steroid injection technique is less than 5%.
In the event of any recurrence within 6 months, Mr George provides free follow-up steroid injections and revision surgery. You are fully covered.
Recovery After Ear Keloid Removal
Recovery is generally comfortable and straightforward. The ear may feel tender and slightly swollen for a few days following surgery.
- Keep the wound dry for 48 hours
- Stitches are removed at 7–10 days
- Avoid sleeping on the operated ear for 2 weeks
- Avoid re-piercing the area permanently — this is the most common cause of recurrence
How Much Does Ear Keloid Removal Cost?
Ear keloid removal at Precision Surgery is priced from £700, including all follow-up appointments and the 6-month recurrence guarantee. Patients are asked to submit a photo so Mr George can assess the keloid and provide a personalised quote.
