Prominent Ear Correction Birmingham

Prominent Ear Correction in Birmingham (Pinnaplasty / Otoplasty)

Are you considering prominent ear correction in Birmingham? This procedure — also known as pinnaplasty, otoplasty, or ear pinning — is designed to reduce ear prominence and improve overall ear contour.

At Precision Surgery Clinic in Edgbaston, Birmingham, we perform ear reshaping under local anaesthetic as a day case procedure. The technique involves recreating the natural folds of the ear and repositioning it closer to the head using permanent internal sutures.

Incisions are placed discreetly behind the ear, where scars typically heal well and are not visible from the front.

Many patients choose pinnaplasty because they feel self-conscious about prominent ears. The aim of treatment is to create a more balanced ear position while maintaining natural proportions. Individual results vary, and suitability for surgery is assessed during consultation.

What Is Pinnaplasty?

Pinnaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes and repositions the ears closer to the head. It is commonly performed for patients who feel their ears project more than they would like.

The procedure typically involves:

  • Recreating the antihelical fold

  • Adjusting cartilage shape

  • Securing the ear position with permanent internal sutures

  • Placing incisions discreetly behind the ear

Who Is Suitable for Ear Correction?

You may be suitable if:

  • You feel self-conscious about ear prominence

  • Your ears project significantly from the head

  • You are in good general health

  • You have realistic expectations

Suitability is confirmed during consultation

How Is the Procedure Performed?

Ear reshaping is performed under local anaesthetic as a day case procedure.

Surgery typically takes 60–90 minutes depending on complexity. You return home the same day without any bulky dressings.

Recovery After Pinnaplasty

  • Mild swelling and bruising expected

  • We do not use a head bandage, Instead, your wound will have a glue dressing and your ears will be glued back to your head

  • This glue becomes waterproof in 48 hours and you can get in the shower, if you have long hair no one will know you had an operation.

  • The glue dissolves and the ear separates to go back to the position we put it in after 10-14 days.

  • Return to work usually within several days

  • Final scar maturation over months

Scars are placed behind the ear where they are generally well concealed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Pinnaplasty is commonly performed in adults as well as older teenagers. There is no upper age limit provided you are medically fit for surgery and have realistic expectations.

Ear correction is often considered once ear growth is largely complete, typically from around 5–6 years of age. Our clinic only offers surgery to patients over the ages of 16.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic in many places, at our clinic, prominent ear correction is usually performed under local anaesthetic. This keeps the cost down and allows you to return home the same day.

Surgery typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the reshaping required. Usually 45 minutes per side for a standard procedure.

Incisions are placed behind the ear in the natural crease where they are usually well concealed. Scars mature gradually over several months.

You will not have a head bandage, just glue as a dressing, which becomes waterproof after 48 hours, so you can get in the shower on day 3. Most patients return to work or school within several days, although strenuous activity and contact sports should be avoided for three months. Swelling and stiffness improve progressively.

The aim of surgery is to reduce ear prominence while maintaining natural ear contours and symmetry. Individual healing and final appearance vary between patients. You can always expect a degree of asymmetry between the two sides of 1-2mm, which is normal.

Recurrence is uncommon but can occur, particularly if sutures loosen or cartilage memory influences shape over time. This is discussed during consultation.

The cost of pinnaplasty depends on the complexity of the procedure. A personalised quote is provided following consultation. Typically the standard price is £3000.
